HAMILTON, NZ - Gallagher’s commitment to Hamilton city has been strengthened with the gifting of a bronze statue in honour of the city’s namesake, Captain Hamilton.
The statue also recognises and celebrates the Gallagher’s 75th birthday.
Earlier this week, Sir William Gallagher, unveiled the life-size artwork which was commissioned by Margriet Windhousen of Timaru, well known in Hamilton for her Victoria Street artwork, "The Farming Family".
Sir William says "This gift to the city celebrates our 75th birthday and 75 years of commitment to the city of Hamilton by the Gallagher organisation. How very apt that a statue of Captain Hamilton should now stand proudly in the city that was named after him."
The statue depicts Captain John Fane Charles Hamilton, the popular Scottish commander of HMS Esk in full navy uniform with sword. At the end of the New Zealand Wars, the four regiments of the Waikato Militia settled as a peace-keeping force across the region and the Kirikiriroa settlement was named after Captain Hamilton who was killed in the battle of Gate Pa.
Margaret Comer, Gallagher Corporate Services Executive says “This is a fantastic gift to the city from a fantastic organisation that continues to provide community support in so many ways. It's taken a very long time for the brave Captain Hamilton to find his rightful place in our fabulous city and the staff at Gallagher is proud of this gift to the city on the occasion of our 75th birthday.”
For Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker, the 75th birthday marks a real milestone.
“For the past 75 years, the Gallagher Group has made a significant contribution to Hamilton in so many ways, and I congratulate them on their 75th birthday celebrations. This gift of a statue of Captain Hamilton recognises the city’s history and on behalf of everyone, I thank Gallagher for this very generous gift.”
