Latest dual-deck model now incorporates Philips’ unique Direct Line Recording Technology

With the latest Philips dual-deck Audio CD Recorder, the CDR 775, users get today’s easiest way to create new, high-quality recordings from digital sources, as well as from analogue sources.

Thanks to its two completely independent CD decks, one of which also has a CD recording capability, the CDR 775 offers numerous advanced CD recording and playback functions. For example, direct recording from a CD source is possible without the need for any connected external equipment. In this mode direct CD-to-CD recordings can be made at double speed, halving the time needed to create a new CD. Recordings of complete discs can also be made at normal speed, while the disc is being played.

For playback, both decks can be used together as a 2-disc CD changer, and 99-track programming and random play functions can be applied seamlessly across both drives. Alternatively both decks can be used completely independently, with separate CD output signals - both digital and analogue - available simultaneously from each drive. This switchable ‘DJ’ mode, in which both CD drives operate separately, opens up a wide range of creative playback possibilities which are sure to be appreciated by many users like DJs and audio enthusiasts.

Direct Line Recording technology

The CDR 775 uses Philips’ Direct Line Recording (DLR) technology to maximize the quality of recordings. This technology allows highly accurate recordings from all sources with a 44.1 kHz sampling frequency to be made bit-by-bit, with the speed of the recording disc precisely matched to that of the source disc. The DLR technology also allows full bit-by-bit recordings to be made of the new HDCD-encoded discs (High-Density Compact Discs). The entire encoding of these discs is therefore reproduced on the copy, and is available for playback on compatible CD players with HDCD decoder.

When recording from other digital sources, their different sampling rates are handled by the recorder’s built-in Sampling Rate Converter, which accepts all digital sampling rates between 11 and 56 kHz. Discs can of course also be recorded from any analogue sources using the recorder’s line input cinch connections. This capability now makes it easy for users to transfer their LP collections to CD, as well as to record from other analogue sources like tapes, radio or even live music.

New CD Text function

Also incorporated in the CDR 775 is the CD Text function. This allows the consumer to put in text information like the album, artist or track name. The CDR 775 can record this CD Text information when making an internal recording from one deck to the other. When making CD recordings users can also enter their own personal texts per complete disc, per track or per artist, each of up to 60 characters. The text is then shown on the display during playback. Furthermore, also CD Text on pre-recorded discs will be displayed when playing the disc back in a Philips Audio CD Recorder.

Even easier user interface

Making a recording on CD even easier and more intuitive, the CDR 775 has a redesigned user interface which features clear messages at every stage to prevent errors and show the user exactly what to do next. This incorporates numerous enhancements such as advanced 99-track programming, easy recording start, an FTD display which gives a clear, at-a-glance indication of the set status, and a music calendar with track bar. A significant operating enhancement is the new ‘Make CD’ function, which allows discs to be recorded and finalised quickly and conveniently with a single command, eliminating the need for a sequence of separate operations. Also new is multi-track erase, which allows multiple tracks to be selected and erased at the same time.

New audio buffer enhances recording

Recording operations with the CDR 775 are further enhanced by the new Audio Buffer, which can store up to 3 seconds of music prior to recording. This allows a mistakenly started recording to be stopped within the first 3 seconds, before the start of any disc writing which would render the disc unusable for a further recording. The Audio Buffer ensures that perfect recordings can always be made without loss of even the smallest amount of music at the start of a track when using synchronized CD recording. The Audio Buffer also allows synchronized start from analogue, as well as digital, sources. It does this by monitoring the external audio signal for the rise in level that indicates the start of play, after which the first few seconds of music are recovered from the buffer for recording.

Digital level control

A digital recording level and balance control now allows manual adjustment to correct variations between individual discs, meaning that you can make your own compilations with perfectly adjusted volume levels of all tracks. Digital recording level adjustments can easily be made by using the Easy Jog control.

Recorded CD-R discs playable on any CD player

The CDR 775 uses special blank CD-R Digital Audio discs, which can be recorded once only, as well as CD ReWritable (CD-RW) Digital Audio discs which can be recorded and re-recorded many hundreds of times over. A major benefit of all the Philips CD Recorders is that CD-R discs recorded on them can be played back on any other CD player, whether home, portable or in-car. Recorded CD-RW discs can be replayed on the CDR 775 itself, as well as on the increasing numbers of new CD players which are CD ReWritable-compatible.

The CDR 775 has a stylish black finish, and is also available in a distinctive champagne-finish version as the CDR 776. Both models will be available from September 1999 onwards in the major European markets, and will be priced at approximately DEM 899 (EUR 460) or equivalent.
