Classroom

Our classroom for all in-door learning sessions with one of the study groups meeting in back.  Class is made up of case studies, with some lecture by the instructors, but primarily small and large group discussions and frequent assignments given to the study groups.

Falls River Challenge - Islands

At the all-day, outdoor "experience" learning at Falls River on Wednesday. Teams are assigned physical and mental challenges that must be tackled as a group.  The photo above is the "islands" challenge, where the entire team must stand on a small wood island, and move the entire group over to a second island using three short boards. If anyone or any board touches the ground, you are assigned "penalties" making the challenge more difficult.  One person above has been penalized by being blindfolded.

Looking up at the Wire

The most challenging assignment is climbing 30 feet up a tree to a tension wire connected between two trees and then walking across the wire by holding on to vertical ropes spaced about 4 feet apart.  In the photo above, I am standing in the middle, adjusting my sun glasses, looking up at the first person on the wire and asking myself, is this too hard?  Should I give it a try?

Climbing up to the Wire

The first few team members find the climb up the tree harder than they anticipated with hand and footholds placed irregularly on the side of the tree. Note, you are wearing a harness and are tethered to a rope held by your team members to protect you from any unplanned descent.

Walking the Wire

I give it a try and climb slowly up to the wire.  The person in the photo above is difficult to identify, but looks like it could be me.  This is as far as I made it on the wire and then asked to be lowered down to the ground. The facilitators tell you to try to stretch beyond your comfort level with these challenges, but you can choose to not participate at any time.  I thought just making it to the top was my stretch, so at this point I asked my team to lower me down and felt great about my participation in this challenge.  I was a part of a strong team and most of my teammates made it all the way across.
